Blog page and Static Home Page?

Hi,

How do I create a static home page?

I know in theory how to do this, but when I create the menu link then when I change the Homepage settings, all the alterations come up on a different page.

If I delete everything, then the home page comes up as I want it to, but there is no menu link.

How can I change all this?
