try this, go to settings > reading > and set the option to post rather than setting a home page
From what I gather that the template is hard coded to ensure its frontpage is not set as a page for home, as it treats a page without the feature or layout options which it grabs from the theme configuration setup and then display the featured images (circles) from the last 3 posts
